Explosion Takes Three Carabinieri During Property Removal Action in Italy

A trio of officers were killed and more than a dozen additional individuals got wounded in what appears to be premeditated blast caused by gas at a farmhouse in northern Italy.

Sequence of Events

The detonation occurred as law enforcement and fire personnel entered the residence close to the Verona region to enforce an removal notice for three siblings aged in their 50s and 60s.

All three victims who died were members of the Carabinieri military police.

Legal Proceedings

One male and one female were arrested at the location and another man who escaped after the explosion was located soon after. All three have been taken to hospital.

The explosion could be heard some 5km (3 miles) away and photographs from the scene showed the structure reduced to a heap of debris.

“We are in a period of mourning,” stated the Interior Minister Matteo Piantedosi, who mentioned that attempts had been made to displace the brother and sister trio in the previous occasions.

The leader of the Veneto area, Luca Zaia, stated the farmhouse was facing an court order due to unpaid amounts accrued by the siblings.

Mediators had been dispatched to talk with the brothers and sister who had barricaded themselves into the house. When the police arrived just after 03:00 (01:00 GMT), officials believe one of the siblings caused the blast.

“As we went inside, we encountered a completely deranged action,” regional commander the police commander stated to reporters.

“A gas cylinder had been set off, and the blast directly hit our officers,” he explained.

Incendiary devices were also found at the property, the interior minister stated.

The wounded by the blast comprised an additional 11 personnel of the military police as well as three officers of Italy's state police and a emergency responder.

Based on information from the prosecuting attorney, the building was in a poor condition and had was without power.

The prosecutor thought the detonation had taken place on a story above the entrance and informed journalists it was a “intentional and planned killing”. Shortly before the blast, he revealed personnel had “noticed a hissing sound, probably the propane tanks being turned on”.

“All of us understood the scenario was critical,” nearby inhabitants informed reporters, noting that the family members had in the past stated to “cause an explosion” rather than leave the house.

“The explosion had left a ‘terrible, very painful and dramatic toll’.”

The Defense Minister the Defence Minister joined other political leaders in commemorating the trio of personnel who had been killed in the line of duty.
