Jennifer Lawrence States Discussing Donald Trump Would ‘Worsen the Situation’ That’s Ripping the Country Apart
The star has revealed that she believes it's no longer appropriate to voice opinions against the Trump presidency, worried it could exacerbate polarizing arguments and further divisions throughout the United States.
‘I Question the Usefulness’, Explains the Actress
In a recent interview, she reflected, “During the first Trump administration, I thought I was acting frantically in a panicked state. But as we’ve learned, through repeated campaigns, celebrities do not make a difference at all on voter decisions.”
She continued, “Why continue? I’m just sharing my opinion on an issue that’s going to heighten conflict that’s ripping the nation apart.”
Shifting Views
The actress has previously been open about voting for both right and leftwing contenders throughout her life. Raised by a right-leaning family in her home state, she cast her ballot for the Republican nominee in the 2008 election prior to switching to the Democrats and stating she recognized during Obama’s administration that backing conservatives was voting against her individual liberties as a woman.
Previous Comments
In 2015, she commented that Trump winning the presidency would be “a disaster” and endorsed the Democratic candidate in the 2020 presidential race. During the most recent election, she gave her endorsement to Vice President Harris, “because I feel she’s an excellent choice and I know that she will do whatever she can to protect abortion access.”
Celebrity Views
Lawrence was aligned with many in the entertainment industry in her rejection of Donald Trump as a presidential contender, but the lack of leverage celebrities have over the voting intentions was underscored by the outcome.
“Another four years feels different,” commented the actress about his leadership. “Because he said what he was going to do. We understood his record for the previous administration. He was explicit. And that’s what we chose.”
Current Projects
Lawrence is highlighting her new film, the filmmaker’s project in which she stars as a young mom who faces challenges with her mental health in rural Montana. At a media event for the film in the film festival, she spoke about Israel’s bombings in Gaza: “It’s frightening. It’s devastating. What’s taking place is nothing short of a humanitarian crisis and it’s terrible.”
Additional Thoughts
She continued by saying that she was saddened by “the hostility in the discussions of American politics at present and how that is going to be accepted to the children right now. It’s going to be normal to them that elected officials deceive.”
The actor attempted to refocus anger about the conflict to decision-makers rather than actors and artists. “Stay focused on the people in charge,” she remarked, which was interpreted as a reference to the declaration endorsed by numerous entertainment industry figures to avoid Israeli film institutions.
Individual Insights
Lawrence, who received an Academy Award early in her career for her part in the acclaimed film, is receiving praise for her portrayal in the new film. While the director has rejected the narrative being seen as one of postpartum depression and psychosis, the actress said that she identified with parts of her character’s journey after the arrival of her second son, soon after shooting ended.
“I felt anxiety for my son,” she commented, “just picturing every negative outcome, and then doubting everything that I was doing. I was seeing a therapist, but I got on a treatment called Zurzuvae and I continued it for a short period and it really helped.”
Career Moments
Jennifer Lawrence also mentioned of the empowering aspect of shooting revealing sequences in the film while she was some months pregnant and couldn’t work out.
“It feels nice,” she remarked, about having to abandon insecurities. “Truly, I sometimes think where I’m like, How exactly do I differ between me and a prostitute? But it doesn’t keep me up at night.”
